A regularly -featured wine for Santa Ynez Inn guests, Demetria Estate has a lot going for it. A family-owned winery, it was established in 2005 with an exclusive goal of producing “wines of distinction and character rivaling those of the world’s greatest wineries”.
With 213 acres of beautiful rolling hills with 38 high elevation hillside acres under vine, Demetria Estate is located above Foxen Canyon in the Santa Ynez Valley. Red varietals include Mourvedre, Grenache and Syrah and white varietals include viognier, marsanne, roussanne and grenache blanc. Demetria produces 2 separate portfolios of wines including Burgundian varietals (honest manifestations of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc) and Rhone-style blends that capture the singularity of the vineyards and region from which they originated. They are farmed sustainably in the Santa Rita Hills of Santa Barbara County.
Winemaker Harry Waye grew up in Australia surrounded by vineyards, although at the time of growing up, he was not into the wine industry. What he was taught from an early age, however, is the importance of taking care of the land as he helped his parents run a cattle and horse property. The skills of working the soil for legume crops, breaking in horses and watching over a herd are skills that would continue to benefit him as he learned more about the wine industry later in life.
Following his sweetheart (now his wife) to Central California, Harry was offered a job at Demetria Estate as a full-time worker and part-time vineyard hand embracing and finding a passion for everything that is wine.
Harry was promoted to the head winemaker position in 2011, as well as the vineyard operations manager. Following in the footsteps of his mentor, Michael Roth, Harry is “continuing the approach of low alcohol, balanced acidity and detailed care of the vineyard”. Harry loves a challenge and has enjoyed exploring experimental wines such as the skin contact Rhone blend called “Beton Blanc” which is concrete aged and fermented and a water submerged whole cluster Grenache.
